Types of Car Washes

The car wash industry has evolved quickly in model types, technology and services. Below is a very broad description of the primary models. As you will see, the primary differences between them is the level of services that are provided, and in each case, requires a different investment and operational strategy.

FULL SERVICE CAR WASH

A full-service car wash is fully employee-operated. Staff manage the entire exterior and interior process, including detailing and vacuuming. Though labor-intensive with higher operating costs, it delivers greater revenue per vehicle in higher-income markets.

EXPRESS / EXTERIOR CAR WASH

An express exterior car wash offers limited services and requires fewer employees. Customers drive through an automated tunnel and use a pay station, with staff assisting as needed. Some sites provide light post-tunnel finishing and free vacuums for customer use.

FLEX SERVICE CAR WASH

A flex car wash combines full-service and express models. Customers go through an automated tunnel, then choose self-service vacuuming or staff-provided detailing. Staffing levels are moderate, balancing efficiency with enhanced customer service.

IN-BAY AUTOMATIC CAR WASH

An in-bay automatic car wash has no conveyor; customers position their own vehicle while the automated system handles payment and washing. Minimal staff and overhead are required, though periodic maintenance, cleaning, and supply needs remain.

SELF SERVICE CAR WASH

A self-serve car wash is a coin-operated, manual model where customers clean their own vehicles. It has minimal overhead and staffing needs. Many locations benefit from water-reduction and reclamation technology, lowering operating costs further.
